FanFic 1/12

~* The Introduction *~

(Please Read This to Better Understand the Story)

This story is a genre commonly known as a ‘FanFic’ which means it is based off of someone else’s work. My story is based off of The 39 Clues, so I can’t sell it. I wrote it online and several people submitted characters for it.
Here are the characters from the original 39 Clues series:

The Branches of the Cahill Family:

Lucian - Good at stealthy, sneaky things and codes
Janus - Talented in the Arts
Tomas - Strong and brave
Ekaterina - Good at scientific things
Madrigals - Are related, have no special talents, but strive for peace.

Amy Cahill - A member of the Madrigal Branch. She is a kind, caring, and smart fourteen-year-old. She lives in Massachusetts. Her only close family is Dan Cahill, her brother. Her parents are dead, and she is cared for by a babysitter, Nellie Gomez.

Dan Cahill - Age eleven. Dan is Amy’s hyper and funny younger brother.

Nellie Gomez - Amy and Dan’s babysitter. She has connections in the mysterious Madrigal Branch.

The Holts - Belong to the Tomas Branch. The dad is Eisenhower; the mom is Mary-Todd. The kids are Hamilton, Madison and Reagan. They are strong but rather unpredictable.

Irena Spasky - A spy for the Lucian Branch. She is middle aged and is ex-KGB. Her son was killed by Isabel Kabra.

Vesper One - A mysterious, evil character who is the head of an underground organization

Vikram Kabra - The Leader of the Lucian Branch.

Isabel Kabra - An evil and cunning woman who is trying to find the Clues. She helps her husband lead the Lucian Branch.

Ian Kabra - A member of the Lucian Branch, Ian is stealthy, smart, and rich. He lives in London. He is related to Vikram Kabra, his dad, Isabel Kabra, his mom, and Natalie Kabra. Age fourteen.

Natalie Kabra - Ian’s younger sister, is almost as ruthless as her parents. She is also snobby and nosy, but strangely endearing.

Grace Cahill - Amy and Dan’s late grandmother. She was also the Madrigal Leader.

Fiske Cahill - Amy and Dan’s great uncle, Grace’s younger brother. Fiske is also a cunning Madrigal Agent.

Alistair Oh - A member of the Ekat Branch, he invented many types of microwavable burritos. He is a Clue Hunter.

Mr. McIntire - A Madrigal lawyer.

Jonah Wizard - A member of the Janus Branch, Jonah is a hip-hop star.

Other book characters may appear later on in the story, but they will be described then, or they are minor characters who are not very important.

Plot Summary for The 39 Clues:

Orphans Amy and Dan belong to a rich and powerful family, the Cahills, related to nearly everyone important in history. When their grandmother dies, she leaves 39 clues, spread across the planet. The person who finds all of them will discover the secret of the Cahills, and become very powerful. So all the relatives, none of them decent or honest, compete to find and solve the clues while trying to eliminate their competition.

I hope this is enough information to help you understand my story!

~* The Explanation *~

Ian Kabra:

Ian Kabra, who would normally be just finishing school this time of year, was instead sitting in a cramped plane with his sister, Natalie. They were headed to the funeral of an old relative in the states, and his Mum had told them that it was imperative that they were there.
“How long does it say this will take?” she asked. Natalie was younger than him, and often incessantly annoying.
“Take a nap,” Ian instructed her, while hunching over his laptop. He had been riding planes his whole life, but so far he had found nothing to help with the monotony of air travel.
He clicked on a website, then groaned as he realized it was one of the sites where the information on it was overwhelmed with ads. He was about to leave it when his screen was filled with a pop-up advertisement proclaiming:

Award Winning Author, Rick Riordan, teams up with Scholastic for a new, suspenseful series - The 39 Clues!
Strange, Ian thought. It was an unusual coincidence that someone would be writing about clues when he and his family had been searching for them for years. And if it wasn’t coincidence, if this was about the real Clues, he had to look into it immediately. His Mum would want to know. As he began his research, a sinking feeling caused his shoulders to droop. His Mum would definitely want to know about this atrocity!

Isabel Kabra:

When Isabel read Ian’s email, it started a chain reaction of problems.
The Lucian stronghold in Paris was in an uproar. Isabel Kabra was giving directions to everyone. Her husband, Vikram, was clueless enough to try to give her advice.
  "Perhaps, dear...''
''Shut up! Do you forget who is in charge here? Because I am.''
She gave Vikram an icy glare. An underling nervously handed Isabel a sheaf of papers.
''Your report, Madame'', he quavered, and then he hurried away.
Isabel sat down with a sigh and pored over the paper:

REPORT ON MR RICHARD RIORDAN
COUNTRY of RESIDENCE: USA
OCCUPATION: AUTHOR
RESIDENCE: SAN ANTONIO, USA
BRANCH: JANUS

Isabel sighed again. That wasn't much to go on. However, there was an important Janus agent in the interrogation room.
Maybe he would be willing shed some light on this information leak. If he wasn’t, there would definitely be some unpleasant consequences.
Isabel walked primly through the stark corridors and entered the cell of prisoner Wesley Bone.
“What can you tell me about this insane breach of Cahill security?” she asked him coldly.
“I’m not telling you anything about it, Lucian witch!” her captive shouted angrily.
“That’s a bad attitude to have, seeing as you are my prisoner,” she retorted. “I guess you’ll be getting a little persuasion to tell me what I want to know.”
She pulled an evil-looking device from her belt and shot Wesley with it. After a few shocks, he was ready to speak.
  "AUGH! STOP! I'll tell you!''
Isabel set the Tazer aside. ''Well?''
"Scholastic has been worried about the Clue Hunt for some time. They are run by the Janus, and the other Branches were getting on their nerves. So they retaliated by spilling everything that has been going on,'' Wesley gasped.
"But why would he do that? It makes no sense!" shrieked Isabel. She was angry, as usual, at the stupidity of every other person on earth.
''They thought they could get kids, and maybe some adults, interested about the clues. The Janus think maybe non-Cahills will see codes or hints at Clues and talk about their sightings on an online message board, which is monitored.''
Isabel stepped out and motioned to a guard to lock the cell door. Trust a Janus to do something stupid like this, Isabel thought. I will have to have my minions- I mean darling children- read these books as they come out.

Amy and Dan Cahill with Mr. McIntire:

Unaware of the turmoil in the Lucian stronghold, Amy and Dan Cahill were halfway across the word, in a law office in Massachusetts.
Dan was sick of holding still, listening to William McIntire, his and Amy’s Madrigal lawyer, droning on and on.
"...These books, The 39 Clues, will be targeted for children aged twelve to fourteen. Your names will be falsified..."
He checked on his sister, Amy. She was listening to McIntire with a very interested look in her eyes.
"...You will be required to report your thoughts and actions without embellishment, and they will be recorded accurately..."
Dan quietly took a rubber band from a pile on the desk.
"Hey Amy, I need to go to the bathroom," he whispered.
Amy nodded absentmindedly, still giving all her attention to McIntire's words. She hardly noticed when Dan stood up and left the room.
Dan remembered a window down this hall. As he approached he slowed to a snail's pace, then stopped. Several flies buzzed serenely on the window sill.
I am no longer Dan Cahill. I am now the… Silent Ninja of Edo! Dan smiled evilly and took aim.
The Silent Ninja stretched his rubber band to full capacity. SNAP!
That was one fly that would never bother anyone again. Dan aimed once again.
This will not be an afternoon boringly spent, Dan thought.

"... So if you will comply with these terms, sign here and here and here," McIntire finished.
  Amy wrote her name. "Dan?"
She looked around the office.
  "Where are you?''

  "Dan!''
The Silent Ninja turned.
  "Oh good, are you done?"
"What are you doing, Daniel?'' asked McIntire.
  "Collecting dead flies." replied Dan.
"Yuck." Amy made a face.
"You need to sign here." McIntire gave him the document and a pen.
Dan wrote quickly, thinking of uses for dead flies. Maybe a collage…

Jonah Wizard and Mr. McIntire:

"Whoa, Dad, this is totally off chain! I will be so famous. Wait, I already am so famous. I will be the most famous guy on earth! I...''
Jonah broke off when his father shook his head. "What, Dad?
"I'm sorry, Jonah. They won't use your real name. I offered them a large sum of money, but they refused. The people in Scholastic don’t want to be accused for being yet another one of your advertisers."
"What? That is totally unfair! Dude!"
"I tried, Jonah." Broderick went back to typing on his Blackberry.
Oh, well, thought Jonah. It will at least be some publicity.
"Sign me up, homie," he told his dad.

Hamilton and Mr. McIntire:

Hamilton Holt was undecided. This guy wanted him to be in a book, and Hamilton wasn't sure he liked the conditions.
I would have to tell them everything? He thought. What if we did something slightly illegal?
Mr. McIntire smiled winningly. ”Come on now, Hamilton, it will be easy. All you have to do is tell us what happens to your team!'' McIntire could see that he was skeptical, so he tried a different route.
"Think of the earnings you would make! One grand for every book! Do you know how expensive a good college is nowadays?"
This caught his attention. He didn't know exactly how much college would cost, but it was a considerable amount, even if he got a sport scholarship.
McIntire smiled and offered an official-looking paper and a pen.
Hamilton hesitated for an instant, then signed.
This shouldn't be too hard, he thought.

Mr. McIntire and Fiske Cahill:

McIntire watched the bulky figure of the Holt boy as he left the office building. He dialed a number on his phone. It was picked up instantly.
"Did he sign?'' Fiske went right to the point.
"Yes. That’s all of them now, except the Kabras."
  "What about Alistair Oh?''
"He agreed over the phone. I faxed him the document."
"All right, let's hope it goes according to plan."
"For Grace's sake."
"And the sake of the earth."
"Of course."
The two Madrigal agents thus ended their melodramatic conversation.

Ian:

Ian sat in his custom-designed La-z Boy chair. He set his book - Studies on the Decline of Our Young People - on the table beside him and checked his clock. It was midnight. You are being so stupid, he thought. Losing sleep over an insipid orphan.
Ian Kabra was feeling guilty. Guilt? Lucians do not have guilt. He tried to convince himself that he wasn't feeling well. Maybe I'm feverish?
But every time he remembered that night, he knew he was lying to himself. He thought of the stupidly astonished look on Amy's face as he stole the serum from her. It had been so easy. Besides, she did see the code. That was reward enough for finding it. And didn’t she know the Clue Hunt was a war?
She and her brother are my enemies.
  It’s that simple.
So why can't I sleep?

Fiske, Nellie, and Unknown Listener:

Fiske flipped open his cellphone. "Hello?"
"Hey, this is Nellie. One Clue down, thirty-eight to go."
"How did the other Clue Hunters act?"
"They were nasty. What else would they be? I told you about the Holts nearly smothering our team with cement. Then Kabra kid got this test tube with green stuff in it, but we got the code. The clue is- "
"Wait! These phones are probably bugged. I'll meet you at our usual spot in this city.” One could never be too careful when one was a Cahill.
  “Sure,” Nellie replied.

The Unheard Listener:

Vesper 1 sighed. The babysitter had been so close to spilling a clue! Oh well, he had patience. He could wait as long as he needed to.
Then I will strike, he thought, and smiled.

Irena Spasky:

Irena Spasky was also smiling. Those silly Cahill children. It would take more than fake names and a shabby hotel to throw her off. She dialed her cell. It was a cheap phone, with no frills. She was to destroy it after she had contacted her employer.
"Hello. The enemy is spending the night at the intersection between waterways 500 and 1220. Their activities today include stealing and destroying a speedboat. They are suspected to have either a Clue or a lead to one. The Kabra children were involved."
  A synthesized voice answered her.

"You have done well today, Spasky. You seem gifted at this sort of work. However, it sounds as if the Cahill children were still in possession of the lead or Clue. This is not acceptable."
"I will do my best to recover it from them."
"I hope so. If you plan to continue in my employment, you will." Vesper One hung up abruptly.
Irena stood glaring at the phone, her eye twitching uncontrollably. This client was much harder to please than the KGB.

Nellie, Amy and Dan:

Nellie flopped down on the thin mattress. This was one thing she would change about travel: shabby hotels. The other was jet lag.
Amy dropped her backpack, then turned to Dan.
"I can't believe you destroyed that poor lady's boat! Don't you know how expensive those are?"
"Leave me alone, Amy." The only thing Dan wanted to do was sleep.
"I'm not leaving you alone! You-"
Nellie broke in. "Calm down, Amy. It was probably insured or something." The 'or something' being funds from her strange employer.
“Let’s just try to sleep. You'll feel better in the morning.”
Amy grunted, but lay down.
I hope these kiddos come through okay, thought Nellie. This Clue Hunt puts them through a lot. It was the last thing that went through her mind before she was fast asleep.
